Biography

Leah Garland is an actress who has enjoyed many plum roles on New York stages, including Nora in A Doll's House and the Innkeeper in Milan Kundera's Jacques and His Master. She has trained with many venerable acting teachers including Morris Carnovsky and Phoebe Brand, and currently studies at the Warner Loughlin Studios in Los Angeles. She loves improvisation and has studied with Gary Austin, Eric Hunicutt, and Donovan Scott, as well as at UCB. A lover of comedy, Leah recently exercised her comic wit as ABS, the lead in the Web Series, Unprotected Texts.

Leah earned her Ph.D. in Performance Studies from New York University and her M.A. in Theatre from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. These programs gave Leah a solid grounding in theatre practice as well as history, literature, criticism, and performance theory. Leah has taught theatre courses while a tenure-track professor at the State University of New York, Geneseo; courses as an adjunct professor at Eugene Lang College and Hofstra University; and as a teaching assistant at NYU. She has directed multiple plays and musicals. Her favorites include Cabaret, The Clean House, The Arabian Nights, and 13.

Her book on performance theory, Contemporary Latina/o Performing Arts of Moraga, Tropicana, Fusco, and Bustamante, was published through Peter Lang Publishing in 2009. She currently resides in Los Angeles where she performs for film and tv.
